Time Change Trouble

by bkhoury on December 08, 2011

I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but we are still not fully recovered from the “fall back” time change. Our new wake-up time until just recently has been 5am.  This has sent our schedule into a tailspin.  Hunter, our two year old, wants to eat lunch at 11. I know that one of the fundamental ways to get the body clock set right is to change meal times.  I compromise by letting him have a very light snack (unless I’m exhausted I may give into a more substantial carb-laden nibble). School pick-up time for my other son is noon, and the exhausted Hunter will be sawing logs by the time we make the five minute trek to the school.

Sometimes I cruelly wake Hunter up when we get home for lunch, and other times he would be too tired to eat anyway.  So I carry him upstairs and snuggle him into his bed where he sleeps with a visible smile between his baby cheeks. And I am so jealous because I’ve been up too and would give anything to just snuggle in next to him if it weren’t for my other son who I have to make lunch for, the twenty emails that need returned, the dishwasher that didn’t get unloaded from the night before, and the fact that I would break the crib.

By 4:30 I’ve started making dinner because by 5:30 we have hit mach breakdown mode.  And even if I served chocolate cake it wouldn’t be on the right plate or the right color.  So we are successfully pulling off the early bird special generally without a breakdown.  And I’ve put the kids to bed earlier. They are now sleeping until 6:15 if the stars align.  It’s a far cry from the good ol’ days of the 7am wakeup time but at least it doesn’t have a “5” at the beginning of the number!

For Christmas we are traveling to the central time zone and then on to a ski trip in mountain time.  At the rate we’re going that would make wake-up time at 4am!  Bring on the mountain roast for me and Santa to enjoy!

In the mean time, Arizona and Hawaii leave their time as is all year round.  Now that sounds like a good idea for parent’s everywhere!

Any of your wiser moms have any suggestions to curb this chaos?  Although always painful, we’ve never struggled with the time change this long before! Do any of you have any travel trips for traveling across time zones?

  • You could try keeping them up later.  I also like to stuff them at night so they might be more likely to sleep longer.  Good luck!

  • The kids will probably sort themselves out after a few days, but the key is for you to not lose your mind during those days.  My secret weapons are grandma (for the kids) and wine (for me).  Good luck and Merry Christmas!

  • I bought my two kids clocks that show them when it is time to get up by either the sun coming up or the clock changing from green to orange.  After a few initial teething troubles I have to say that they worked brilliantly.  The Gro Clock sleep changer came with a great book which tells the story of a tired pig and even my little one was able to relate to the story and she used to get out of bed to wake my older son up!

Publishing term papers truly got horribly tedious last term. Many topics to deal with. Good thing I was able to find the answer on-line that got me through the educational year. This internet site presents excellent help to all of us, college or university students!
