Summertime Downtime

by bkhoury on July 05, 2012

This past week we were hit hard by storms whipping across the country.  On Sunday, we learned there would be no camp the next day due to the power being out. Every day I checked to see if power was restored, and every day camp was cancelled.  Every day my “fine-tuned” schedule was interrupted by suddenly having to entertain two busy boys all day.
I must admit I was slightly distraught I couldn’t “ship them off” to camp every morning.  We all know what it feels like to be teetering on the edge of keeping it all together, only to have the rug pulled out from under us.

Then, something happened and I succumbed.  On a whim I picked up two water shooters at the nearby dollar store.  This resulted in hours of water fights and oodles of giggles.  Clearly the best $2.00 I have ever spent! The boys have devoted the week to the seemingly mundane: taking long walks around the block, making pillow forts, watering the tomatoes, filling up the bird bath, eating watermelon and popsicles.
There have been surprisingly few fights, and when I suggest we go “do” something, they want to stay home and play. They have never been happier!

In the summer of soccer camp, rain forest camp, dinosaur camp, swim lessons, children museums and water parks, it took us a all a few days to simmer down.  However, this week has been really nice in a crazy toddler way.  Next week we start up again, but maybe we should have these activity vacations a little more often. Here’s to summertime downtime! – Planned or unplanned.

  • Really I am amazed to read the impression of summertime downtime review. It’s another great topic for the summer of soccer camp, rain forest camp, dinosaur camp, swim lessons, children museums and water parks! hotdog grills
