Sounds of satisfaction

by bkhoury on August 11, 2011

Sometimes amidst all of life’s chaos there is simply cuteness. The challenge is to notice it. Last week my husband had come home from a horribly stressful week at work. On Saturday morning as we all sat around the breakfast table rehashing, Ryan detected something peculiar. “Hunter, what are you doing?” Hunter looked up at his Daddy with his big blue eyes as if to say, “What on earth are you talking about?”

Hunter sat in his chair munching away on his scrambled eggs, more contently than I have seen him (or noticed him) in a long time. As he politely put one bite in after another, he mumbled a low consistent “mmmmmm, mmmmmmm, mmmmm” to himself.  There was a sense of self-satisfaction and perfect happiness garnered from these eggs that if you could bottle, would surely make the world a better place.

At lunch that day it happened again! And again at dinner! Ryan and I would look at each other and smile, sharing a secret moment—not wanting to put words to it or risk ruining the innocence of it. Luckily it has continued throughout the week. Unfettered moments of joy that would probably have gone unnoticed. Who knows how long he has been doing this? I hate to think that I may have been too busy telling the boys to sit down, eat their meal and use a fork to miss this display completely. Maybe we should all try making this sound of satisfaction the next time we are eating and see if we can achieve the contentment of a 2 year old! Try it, I dare you!
