Performance Art at the Table

by bkhoury on March 01, 2012

My two year old has a dinner table M.O. that is quickly becoming tiresome.  When we come to the dinner table he promptly looks at whatever we may be having, and puts on a performance worthy of an Oscar.  He puts his hands on his head and proclaims in his most dramatic voice,  “NO, I don’t want that either!”

It doesn’t matter if it is his favorite dish or a something he has never seen before.  The script is always the same – a sure clue that it is in fact a mere performance.  And my reaction – well rehearsed- is always the same.  “Ok, Hunter you don’t have to eat it, but this is what we are having for dinner.”

I try to busy myself with eating, talking to Will or grabbing something from the kitchen so there is no further engagement with my little actor in training. And then, virtually every single time, I look over and there he is eating happily.  It takes every ounce of my will power to not say mockingly, “See, you do like it don’t you. I told you so.”  But that wouldn’t be a very mature mommy now would it.  And the show goes on….
