Don’t Rush Me Mommy

by bkhoury on February 17, 2011

My younger son Hunter has surprisingly large hands for a little man.  I mean at 6 months he could palm a small ball!  Even today when he holds my hand I feel like I’m holding my 3 year olds hand.  Because of this, he had less fine motor skills as he began eating solid foods.  He was also slower to eat solid foods than my first son.

I thought this was weird when my friends mentioned that their second child wants to eat what older brother or sister is eating sooner.  My mom kept asking me why I wasn’t feeding him crackers and other solids.  The answer was that Hunter wasn’t really interested.

Then one day I realized that he had mastered—I mean really mastered—the pincer grasp.  Prior to that he had been cheating by using his thumb and two or three other fingers.  Yep, you guessed it.  Suddenly every morsel of food within his reach was in his mouth.

Sometimes I have to remind myself to just let nature take its course and not rush past the skills required to accomplish each milestone.  I mean after all, I’ve never met a man who doesn’t know how to shovel food into his mouth!
